Acne is a common skin disorder that affects most people at a point in their lives.  It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that's hot or painful to touch.

Acne most commonly develops on the:

  • face - this affects almost everyone with acne
  • back and chest - affects more than half of the people with acne

Types of spots

  • blackheads - small black or yellowish bumps that develop on the skin; they're not filled with dirt, but are black because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces pigmentation
  • whiteheads - have a similar appearance to blackheads, but my be firmer and won't empty when squeezed
  • papulas - small red bumps that may feel sore or tender
  • pustules - similar to papules, but have a white tip in the centre, cause by a buildup of pus
  • nodules - large hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful
  • cysts - the most severe type of spot cause by acne; they're similar to boils and carry the greatest risk of causing permanent scaring

What can I do if I have acne?

Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels during puberty, but can start at any stage.

Certain hormones cause the grease-producing glands next to hair folicles in the skin to produce larger amounts of oil (sebum).

This abnormal sebum changes the activity of the usually harmless skin bacterium, which becomes more aggressive and causes inflammation and pus.

The hormones also thicken the inner lining of the hair folicle, causing blockage of the pores. Cleaning the skin doesn't help to remove this blockage. Fix the problem by paying attention to your hormones!

The self-help techniques may be useful:

  • Don't wash affected areas of skin more than twice a day.   Frequent waching can irretate the skin and make symptoms worse.
  • Wash the affected area with a mild soap or cleanser with lukewarm water.  Very hot or cold water can make acne worse.
  • Don't try to "clean out' blackheads or squeeze spots.  This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring. Use a cleanser for Acne/Oily skin and a alcohol base toner, to dry out the acne.
  • Do not use too many cosmetics and make-up, it can just irretate the skin more. Keep your skin clean.
  • Completely remove make-up before going to bed.
  • There are many cosmetics on the market for skin care, find a range that suits your needs.
  • Naturo's Acne formula is all natural anti-inflammatory supplement that will help inflammation and prevent inflammation.
  • Acne develops usually in teenage years, due to a hormone imballance and an increase in androgens. It is called hormonal acne.
