Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

There are two main types of diabetes - type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes, starts as insullin resistance

This type is far more common than type 1.  This is where the body doesn't produce enough insulin, or the body's cells don't react to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.

If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you may be able to control your symptoms simply by eating healthy, exercising regularly and monitoring your blood sugar levels.  Note that diabetes 2 is a progressive condition, you may eventually need medication, usually in the form of capsules that helps you to regulate your blood sugar level.  It is important to take action before you end up with diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, the body's immue system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin.  As no insulin is produced, your glucose levels increase, which can seriously damage your body's organs.

Type 1 diabetes is often known as insulin-dependent diabetes. If you have type 1 diabetes, you'll need insulin injections for the rest of your life. You'll also need to pay close attention to certain aspects of your lifestyle and health to ensure your blood glucose levels stay balanced.

Diabetics should pay attention to these following long-term effects:

  • Damage to large and small blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack and stroke
  • Problems with kidneys because high glucose levels can damage blood vessels in your kidneys. as well as eyes, mentioned above
  • Blood circulation is much slower in diabetic people because diabetes causes blood vessels of the foot and leg to narrow and harden. It is important to keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control at all times.
  • Everyone with diabetes aged 12 and over should go for eye screening once a year.  Your eyes are at risk to develop diabetic retinopathy, a condition that damages the bloodvessels in the tissue at the back of the eye (retina).
